Five years ago, Duane Harper, Sr. and the love of his life, Gabrielle, were
saving for their wedding day. As with any couple, it was a time of excitement,
a time of anticipation, but most of all, a time for joy. Yet, it was around
this time of elation that a devastating diagnosis threatened their happiness.
In 2001, Duane Harper was diagnosed with renal failure, a condition where
one’s kidneys fail to function properly. Though shocked and overwhelmed
by the report, Duane and Gabrielle refused to be deterred by the circumstance.
Therefore, without hesitation, they decided to sacrifice their dream wedding.
In faith and more in love than they’ve ever been, Duane and Gabrielle
defied all odds, and on January 23, 2002, the couple marched down to the local
Justice of the Peace and united as one.
Over the years, Duane underwent surgical procedures and received dialysis
treatments that were necessary to maintain his health. His first surgery took
place the day after they eloped. It was a tough time, taxing and difficult
emotionally and physically, but through it all, the couple endured.
Gabrielle became the epitome of a devoted wife. She stayed true to the vows
she made and understood what it meant to love even “through sickness
and in health.” She stuck by Duane caring for him, driving him to his
dialysis treatments, doctor appointments and even to work. She tailored her
life around the needs of her husband, and before long, Gabrielle learned how
to cook according to her husband’s suggested diet. Gabrielle became a “superwoman” of
sorts, juggling many hats in working her own job, maintaining the family’s
household, helping their child with homework, attending school functions, and
keeping her spiritual commitment to her dance ministry at church. Gabrielle
did it all and did not allow the weight of responsibility to crush her… it
refined her and made her strong enough to ensure that her family overcame what
seemed impossible.
A year later, things began to turn around. After sowing blood, sweat and
tears, enduring treatments, appointments, trials and setbacks, Duane and Gabrielle
reaped a huge blessing. Duane’s aunt donated her kidney to help restore
his health. The transplant was a success, and with the new kidney it wasn’t
long before the couple’s quality of life was restored and better than
ever.
On October 2, 2006, Mr. Duane Harper, Sr. wrote a letter, in faith, to The
Donnie Simpson Morning Show outlining why he wanted his bride to finally
have the wedding that she sacrificed years ago. He wrote, “She is my
life, my strength, my inspiration, and most of all, my soul mate.” Duane’s
heartfelt words, sincere love, deep affection and great appreciation for
his wife transcended through paper and into the heart of the producers of Donnie’s
Morning Wish, an on-air segment that spreads holiday cheer by granting
the wishes of its listeners. While on the air with the couple, Donnie Simpson
applauded Mr. Harper for his transparency and commented, “It’s
not often you hear men talk about their wives like this. This is great. I
wish more men did.”
Impressed by his genuine devotion, The Donnie Simpson Morning Show partnered
with Sharon Elaine Lewis, CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Washington Weddings magazine,
to maximize the perfect opportunity and help Duane and Gabrielle connect the
dots between their love, life and marriage. On January 23, 2007, the Harpers
renewed and exchanged wedding vows in the witness of 100 of their closest friends
and family members. Washington Weddings pulled together a spectacular
team of wedding professionals who were dedicated to exceeding the expectations
of the Harpers, and exceed they did! What was meant to be an event worth only
$70,000 became an even grander blessing totaling over $125,000; a blessing
that could not have gone to a more deserving couple.
Now, a dream has become a life-long reality, and it all began with a husband’s
wish. What started off as an insurmountable challenge has turned around for
the good. The five year journey of Gabrielle and Duane will forever be an unforgettable
experience etched in time. God has truly blessed the Harpers, and the greatest
testimony of their union proves that enduring love still exists.
